An essential part of management development is to get your employees thinking things through and making good decisions, I started by talking decisions through with my staff whenever opportune.
When they ask “what do you want me to do” discuss the options with them and get them to suggest the course of action, if they are wrong talk it through with them, if they are right just tell them to get on with it.
Before long you will have the confidence to trust your staff, my employees always new I would never undermine them and they would always have my full support, my instructions were always to make a decision, never let it wait until I return, just let me know what you have done. If the decision is right, well done and that just increases my confidence, if the decision is wrong then we talk it through and between us (together) take any action required to correct the situation.
You can’t manage everything, you must learn to work through your employees and your management structure, this is what they call true leadership.
