Hostgator and our Journey from 1and1, worrying times!

Hostgator is our new home, we have been quiet at ‘Its just life!’ for a few days, well just over a week, but it had to happen eventually and has been in and out of our plans for about a year, that is moving our internet operations to another ISP and in this case Hostgator.

So Hostgator is our new home, no ISP is perfect but 1and1 were getting to be a pain and a drag on our further online growth but Hostgator handled everything, including the transfer of ‘Its just life!’ with aplomb.

Hostgator should allow us to achieve our dreams, we have big plans to expand way beyond ‘Its just life!’ and just could not envisedge being able to s achieve that smoothly with 1and 1 but transferring a domain/site is always daunting but Hostgator offers a free transfer and it went very smoothly with a professional and helpful team.

The final choice of ISP was between Bluehost and Hostgator, Bluehost is an excellent ISP and is slightly cheaper but does not offer the free site transfer, apart from price and the site transfer the packages offered by Bluehost and Hostgator are very similar.

On this occasion though the free, no hassle site transfer was the deciding factor but I may return to Bluehost as a 2nd ISP later in the year and maybe they should consider a free site transfer facility with every new package and a paid facility.

The problems we had with 1and1, whom we had been with for 10 years, were really that they appeared more geared to the larger corporates than for the smaller operations, they have 24/7 support but at the lower level of shared servers, although very polite and helpful, their knowledge was extremely limited and at times the technicians could be difficult to understand.

1and1 also is behind the game regarding software versions and help with software installations such as Zend Optimizer and Zend Guard whereas with Hostgator the software is already loaded and available, when it comes to the administration panel 1and1 do not use CPanel but their own offering which is again very limited.

1and1 are a massive organisation but a little inflexible for the smaller business, I am sure though that for a large corporate with dedicated servers they are superb!

Hostgator use CPanel and offer the full range of services such as site/domain transfers, unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domains and unlimited SQL Databases to add to the, so far, superb 24/7 support, only time will tell whether I have made the right choice but so far I am extremely satisfied and would not hesitate to recommend Hostgator.

I will keep you all informed about my experiences as time progresses!
